Hope Awaits Ministries is a faith-based charitable mission called to proclaim and demonstrate the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ through meeting the spiritual, physical and emotional needs of those who are homeless or in need of hope. While Hope Awaits offers housing and other programs that meet basic needs, our real purpose is to create a family atmosphere where homeless men can come to be loved, encouraged, healed, and restored – a safe place in which men can encounter Jesus Christ and be transformed.
The Shelter Supervisor is chiefly responsible for designing and implementing strategies, policies, procedures, and best practices for further developing Hope Awaits Ministries’ programs and for attracting, engaging, managing, training, developing, and retaining Hope Awaits Ministries’ most important asset, its people.
Spiritual Development: seeking God’s direction for the ministry, staff, volunteers, clients, and programs. Overseeing the spiritual development of staff and volunteers. Ensuring that programs and practices align with Christian principles. Encouraging evangelization throughout Hope Awaits Ministries programs. Praying with and for clients, staff, and volunteers.
Program Development: developing and implementing programs, policies, procedures, and best practices designed to help Hope Awaits Ministries achieve its missional objectives, and to attract, manage, train, develop, and retain highly effective employees
Program Management: overseeing and evaluating the delivery of Hope Awaits Ministries’ programs and services
Personnel Management: overseeing and managing personnel matters such as hires, promotions, salary changes, disciplinary actions and terminations, and maintaining all records pertaining thereto
Performance Management: managing employees’ performance and issuing correction or discipline when necessary
Health and Safety: managing all aspects of Hope Awaits Ministries’ health and safety program
Compliance: ensuring Hope Awaits Ministries remains compliant with the mandates of governmental agencies in matters relating to Human Resources and Health and Safety
Training and Development: securing or executing training and development initiatives designed to improve employee competencies or maintain compliance
Engagement: assessing and monitoring employee engagement or morale levels and making recommendations pertaining to the same
Staff Management: directly managing all staff, observing their activities, establishing targets and goals, communicating organizational imperatives, managing their performance, and helping them develop spiritually and professionally
Volunteer Management: directing the activities of volunteers, directly and through other staff
Covering Positions: acting as the Executive Director in their absence. Performing shelter care worker duties as required
Engaging in other activities as directed and/or as necessary for the health and success of Hope Awaits Ministries
Reports to: The Executive Director
Direct Reports: The Shelter Supervisor presides over 7-8 staff in total
Knowledge: The Shelter Supervisor will have a generalized understanding of the Human Resource discipline, including recruitment, retention, performance management, legal compliance, disability management, and human rights; as well as an understanding of program management and development.
Skills: The Shelter Supervisor will be a skilled communicator, a critical thinker, and a proficient multitasker. They will also be skilled at managing conflict and navigating difficult conversations.
Personal Characteristics: The Shelter Supervisor will be a natural leader and possess a calm demeanour that resists capitulating to the urgency of the moment. They will be the voice of ‘sober second thought’ when circumstances require a level head, and will excel in putting people at ease.

A Christian Lifestyle: the individual must have a lifestyle consistent with biblical Christianity, actively abstaining from sinful or shameful behaviour including, but not necessarily limited to, theft, lying, greed, idolatry, violence, rage, fraud, slander, gossip, lawbreaking, drunkenness, divisiveness and sexual immorality.
A varying combination of skills and experience may be considered when awarding this position to an applicant.
This position requires the following:
Experience: at least 1 year of experience in Management, Human Resources, Leadership or a related field
Legal Standing or Clearances: a clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check
The following qualifications are considered ideal:
Education: a diploma or bachelor’s degree in Management, Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field
Experience: at least 5 years’ experience in Management, Human Resources, Leadership or a related field
Training: current training in First Aid, CPR, and/or Crisis Intervention

Hours Per Week: 24-40

Candidates must be flexible in their working hours and willing to work weekends and holidays, as the position includes on-call availability in emergencies.
